August was, of course, an important month at the battlefield. While it would be hard to top the events of the 250th anniversary last year, the Friends of Bennington Battlefield decided to try something different. This year our commemoration ceremony included a visit from local students participating in the Summer History Institute of Hoosick Falls. They got a feel for the life of a Revolutionary War era soldier by creating an encampment on the battlefield and then helped us share accounts of the battle the following day.

We also got involved with Battle Weekend. Vermonters on on this list will know perfectly well what it is all about, but the Yorkers may be scratching their head. August 16 itself is a state holiday in Vermont and the weekend following is celebrated as Battle Weekend with various events including a parade and race in Bennington. We paid a visit to the first annual Battle of the Pies on Saturday and on Sunday offered hourly tours of the battlefield. We hope to keep us this tradition in years to come.

In September, the Friends held their final meeting of the year. They will convene again March 3, 2019 at 3:00 PM (3/3 at 3!) to hold elections. This will be an important meeting and if you haven't had the chance to attend or have always wanted to get involved, the reader is encouraged to mark their calendar.
